Taba and Nuweiba: a slower journey along the Gulf of Aqaba

Journal · 2026-10-14

From the coast north of Dahab to Pharaoh’s Island: discover the character of Taba and plan a coastal stay with room for the sea, history and mountains.

Why continue north?

The eastern coast of Sinai gives a journey a natural direction: from Sharm towards Dahab, then Nuweiba and Taba. Taba faces the Gulf of Aqaba, with mountains behind the coast. Its appeal is the combination of sea and a quieter holiday rhythm. Think of this as a different base for part of your trip, rather than one more stop to squeeze into an already full day from Sharm. A useful first decision is whether you want to change accommodation or simply explore one area from a fixed base.

Pharaoh’s Island and Saladin’s fortress

One of Taba’s distinctive landmarks is the fortress on Pharaoh’s Island, also called Coral Island. The Egyptian Tourism Authority describes a maritime site associated with Saladin, who expanded the fortification in the twelfth century. The setting makes the relationship between defensive architecture and the gulf easy to understand: this is history viewed from the water. If this is the main reason for your trip, first confirm whether an island visit is operating on your dates, where the boat departs and whether landing and entry are included. Do not confuse this fortress with the Citadel of Cairo.

Nuweiba as part of the journey

Nuweiba gives the route between Dahab and Taba another possible overnight stop. The national tourism map presents it as a quieter coastal destination. For planning, the exact location matters more than the town name: compare your accommodation with the beach you will actually use and the pickup point for any activity. If you prefer to unpack only once, choose one coastal base and leave another place for a later trip. If changing accommodation is part of the experience, avoid attaching a major excursion to the same day as a long transfer.

A suggested three-part stay

Our suggested structure is simple: arrival and time by the sea; a separate day for a confirmed cultural or nature visit; and a final unhurried morning before departure. It is an editorial suggestion, not a bookable package or a guaranteed schedule. Keep the island excursion flexible until the operator confirms it. For a sea activity, ask about the actual entry point, supervision and equipment. A shoreline view does not tell you whether swimming access is suitable for your group. Give children, inexperienced swimmers and anyone who prefers staying ashore a comfortable alternative.

What to settle before booking

Check the complete transfer between your arrival point and your accommodation, the return arrangement and what happens if an activity cannot operate. Use a local licensed operator for routes away from the main coastal destinations, and confirm the current route and any permissions before paying. An itinerary within Egypt is separate from a border crossing: do not assume that an excursion, visa arrangement or hotel booking includes entry to another country. This guide intentionally gives no fixed transfer time or border-opening promise. Use the linked official travel information and the operator’s written confirmation for your actual dates.
